SS02: AI Semiconductor Technology for Consumer Systems Session Chair Prof. Hyuk-Jae Lee, Seoul National University Session Scope Artificial intelligence is widely used in consumer systems. However, AI computation demands a very powerful neural processor to handle complex AI models. As a result, the integration of a neural processor increases the development cost and power consumption of consumer systems. Recently, extensive research has been conducted to reduce the complexity of neural processing computations, from circuit to system-level design. Efficient optimization techniques have been studied and proposed for accelerating deep neural networks and increasing the utilization of neural processors. Additionally, effective integration of neural processor systems has been extensively developed. This special session presents recent research results on optimization and integration techniques for AI applications in consumer systems. The latest trends and examples are to be shared to understand how AI technology can be more efficiently and effectively integrated into consumer systems.

SS04: FPGA and related applications for consumer electronics Session Chair Prof. Minoru Watanabe, Okayama University, Japan Session Scope Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are widely used for a variety of applications, in particular, for consumer electronics. Currently, consumer electronics frequently use an FPGA as a replacement of application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). However, the latest FPGA researches have gone to the great next-generation field beyond such simple ASIC like use. This organized session will discuss the state-of-the-art FPGA researches and related high-performance applications (for example, server applications). Based on the latest FPGA researches, we will discuss how to apply the latest FPGA researches onto consumer electronics.
SS05: Radiation-hardened wireless communication systems for consumer electronics Session Chair Prof. Minoru Watanabe, Okayama University, Japan Session Scope Up to now, we have faced some nuclear accidents in the world just like Three Mile Island accident, Chernobyl nuclear accident, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant meltdown accident, and so on. After such accidents, while the plant worker requires radiation-hardened systems, in particular, radiation-hardened wireless communication systems, people requires handy-treatable radiation sensors in home to measure the radiation level of food, water, atmosphere, house, garden, and so on. This session will mainly discuss some radiation tolerant systems, in particular radiation hardened wireless communication systems.
SS06: Massive and ubiquitous architecture for social infrastructure Session Co-chairs Prof. Chikara Ohta, Kobe University, Japan Prof. Tetsuya Yokotani, Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Japan Session Scope Nowadays, many devices, such as computers, sensors, actuators, and files containing data and software, are ubiquitously distributed across networks. Some computers also have significant computational resources, such as xPUs and FPGAs. This situation will continue to evolve. To integrate and leverage these computing resources, considering network resources networking them, even low-power terminals like wearable devices can achieve the processing capabilities required for advanced social services. This special session explores the realization and application of network architectures featuring distributed transparency, which enables users to effortlessly utilize a multitude of distributed computing devices without being consciously aware of their presence. To develop intelligent consumer-electronics technologies for the next-generation smarter home/life products, the intelligent devices must strengthen their edge computing capability dramatically by using advanced and AI-based image and signal processing methodologies, which will involve the deep-learning based object detection and classification technologies, hardware-based deep-learning acceleration design, advanced edge-based digital image processing technology, etc. By using the intelligence and emerging edge computing based circuit and system designs, the next-generation consumer-electronics products will effectively raise and expand the application fields in our daily life.

Aiming to enhance comfort, health, and quality of life through real-space media, sensory integration, and life-logging, additionally to create immersive experiences with telepresence, VR/AR, and high-fidelity audiovisuals. Interaction technologies including AI-driven robots or persona, smart broadcasting, intuitive controls, telework, and remote education/medicine. SS10: Smart Transport Protocols and Controls for Future Consumer Communication Networks Session Chair Prof. Yosuke Tanigawa, Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan Session Co-Chair Daiki Nobayashi, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan Session Scope Required transport layer protocols and controls are changing as consumer communication networks, including backbone optical networks and wireless access networks, achieve higher capacity and become more diverse. Technologies related to other layers are also being studied to further contribute to increasing the capacity and reducing the transfer latency, and it is desirable that these technologies are compatible with specific transport layer protocols such as TCP while maintaining the independence from the transport layer. This session will discuss state-of-the-art smart transport protocols, controls, and related technologies, and how to realize reliable data transfer in such future consumer communication networks.

SS12: AI and Optimization for Smart City IoT System Session Chair Prof. Seokheon Cho, University of California, San Diego Session Scope As Artificial Intelligence (AI) and mathematical optimization technologies advance, consumer electronics are gradually transformed into intelligent edge computing devices and connected to a smart city Internet-of-Thing (IoT) system. AI and optimization technology-powered consumer electronics have abilities to pre-process the collected data from various assets, analyze pre-processed data to predict and optimize, transfer valuable analytical insights throughout the networks of smart city, and control devices with optimal actions. A smart city IoT system consisting of intelligent consumer electronics can eventually enhance the overall quality of life of citizens as well as provide the solutions to cope with challenges. In this technical session, it is strongly recommended to introduce AI and mathematical optimization tools, which can be applied to consumer electronics and smart city networks, to efficiently manage electricity, air and water quality, public transportation, public health and safety, and so on.
